From the Montreal Gazette today:
“Little Burgundy residents have been called to a town hall meeting tonight to discuss their concerns over recent shootings in their neighbourhood, drug dealing and problems with the homeless. The meeting is being organized by the Burgundy Urban Mediation Group, a local organization that aims to curb violence by resolving disputes.”
The meeting is open to all! Police officers, local politicians and officials have been invited to attend.
Location: Little Burgundy Sports Complex. 1825 Notre Dame St. W. Map.
Date and Time: Monday October 29th. 7:00 PM.
There is an article published in the Gazette about the meeting. A quick synopsis: there were two shooting deaths in Little Burgundy in October. This meeting was organized by a community group called “Burgundy Urban Mediation Project (BUMP)”.
Over 200 residents were at the meeting. Residents and officials are in shock about the level of violence. The borough mayor (Mme. Montpetit), city officials, and Community Police Station #15 commander were present. Each stated what they have been doing to curb the problem. The officials took questions from the residents and listened to their concerns.
Many of the residents cite the high level of poverty and high-drop out rate of youth in the area as a principle cause of the rise in gang activity and the recent violent shootings.
