It was announced last week in the Voix-Populaire that the only post office in Pointe St-Charles will be closing in March 2008 or earlier. Currently the post office is located at 1695 Grand Trunk in the heart of the point. It is proposed to move it near the Victoria bridge at 225 rue Bridge. In addition, Canada Post is intending to open a postal outlet in a private business in the Pointe, as soon as they find a potential partner.
An editorial opposing the closure was published in the Voix-Populaire on August 24th. It mentions that the new post office isn’t walking distance from the Pointe, nor is there public transportation. In addition, about 100 community groups and individuals rent postal boxes, 200-300 people use the money order service, and many businesses rely on the services of the Grand Trunk post office. It is also the opinion of Action-Gardien (an organization representing several community groups in the area) that a private postal outlet will not provide the same level of service as a full service post office, and that the citizens of the Pointe will lose out in the long run.
